Well in advance of construction, many Hamilton families contracted for space in the building. Bayview's advertisements include the phrase, \"serving Burlington & Hamilton since 1925\". The original owner, Oscar M. Trano, died in 1955. Cremations began in 1958 with an installation inside the mortuary. In 1969 a separate crematory was built, attached to the rear, with a doorway into the lower floor corridor. In 1985 Pat Markey of Hamilton bought the property and changed the name to Bayview Cemetery and Crematory. ARCHITECTURE: This is a concrete structure, clad with sandstone veneer. The central front entrance, with broad steps leading to a high portico, dominates the front elevation. The four columns are fluted with composite Corinthian capitals and support a lintel with a heavily dentillated pediment. The building openings are severely classical. The blank walls of the long wings of the front elevation are defined by relief running courses and by slight projections at the ends and near the portico. The paired bronze doors of the front entrance open onto the narthex at the rear of the large upper-floor chapel. From each side of the narthex, a wide main corridor extends, each with two side aisles extending to the rear of the building. These contain tiers of crypts for burial compartments, with marble tablets of inscriptions. Some sections have tiers of smaller niches for urns of cremated remains; a section of these walls is called a columbarium. The lower floor has the same arrangement, with a smaller chapel. The two chapels are linked by a wide marble staircase. All floors are marble. The large stained-glass windows at the ends of some corridors and aisles, and at the stairway in front of the main chapel, are the work of James Blomfield, a well-known painter and stained-g;ass artist, who died in 1951 and is buried in the mausoleum. ENVIRONMENT: The mausoleum is well located on a site overlooking the Bay and adjacent to Woodland Cemetery. There are three sites for columbaria or burial niches in the grounds of the Mausoleum: the Birch Circle in front and Bayview Glen and Walnut Grove at the rear. Residential development near the mausoleum has been somewhat sparse. With the proposed higher density residential development in the neighbourhood, smoke from the cremations may be perceived as a nuisance. USABILITY: An application has been submitted to add wings for expansion. INTEGRITY: The structure has been well maintained. In 1985 the walls were cleaned by sandblasting, the interior renovated, and lights installed in the corridors EVALUATION: B. 72: of importance and eligible for designation under the Ontario Heritage Act The evaluation is based on criteria designed for the classification of heritage buildings, published in Harold Kalman's The Evaluation of Historic Buildings (Ottawa: Ministry of the Environment, 1980).
