Photograph only"},{"label":"Description","value":"Con 5 NS Pt Lt 6 1880 A. 93 The Charles Readhead Farms and Farminghouse \"Willowcome Farms and Farming\" HISTORY: Built in 1880 for Charles Readhead. In 1877 the property of John Readhead (Halton Atlas): this house not shown Turcotte, The Growing Years, p. 69, has a note on John Readhead and his son Charles, who owned a 100-acre Farms and Farming on Walkers Line. ARCHITECTURE: A very fine example of a complex multi-gabled brick structure. High-pitched cross-gabled roofs above a one-and-a-half storey structure. The front elevation has an offset front-gabled front wing, and an end-gabled side wing. From that side wing extends a gabled rear wing. On the south elevation, the roof lines of both the front and rear wings are broken by high-pitched gables, each of which have a round-arched window with teardrop tracery. The only other example of this is the Colling - Coulson house in Lowville, at 6042 Guelph Line. The front elevation of the side wing also has a gable and arched window with teardrop tracery. The other windows are 2/2 wood sash with segmented arches. All have their original louvred shutters. At the back of the rear wing are two quarter-pie windows. The front entrance has (replacement) sidelights but no transom. A generously proportioned hipped-roof verandah is supported on Doric columns on brick bases. The complexity of this house is comparable to the Readhead house in Lowville (5772 Guelph Line). ENVIRONMENT: Beautifully sited. Bronte Creek runs through the property (downstream from the site of John Readhead's sawmill in Lowville). USABILITY: Adapted for contemporary residential use. INTEGRITY: Very well maintained. The replacement doors are the only inauthentic note. The verandah includes an enclosed vestibule at the side-front door. The one-storey rear addition is compatible and links well with the rear wing with its new large windows.
