In 1792, he married Elizabeth Blauw and with their 1-year-old son arrived in Wellington Square, Nelson township in early 1800 settling in Brant's Block. His son, Augustus Jr. (1805 - 1892) was the first non-aboriginal baby born in Brant's Block. In 1806, Augustus received a license to operate his own inn, a two storey square timber building, on the lakeshore, three-quarters of a mile from Joseph Brant's house. After Brant's death, he purchased 200 acres from Brant's estate. At age 47 he was not selected for service in a flank company of the militia. But he still needed to contribute to war service. He served a total of 12 days and was fined 5 Pounds between Dec. 1, 1814 and Mar. 1, 1815 probably for being absent without permission. Over the Winter of 1813, Mohawks attached to General Proctor's forces (British) were billeted at the Brant house and Augustus Bates' Inn. His son Walter recalled the area around both residences as being thick with pine timber. Also, he said many a night he had seen the Indians lying so thickly all over the floor of his home that he could hardly step for them and wouldn't dare to say a word to affront them. After the war, Bates petitioned the government for War Losses damages of 991 pounds, 12 shillings and 6 pence including crops, timber, fence rails and Farms and Farming animals. Lieutenant James Fraser of the Indian Department, who also boarded there, supported the petition. The suit dragged on until 20 Oct. 1823 when he was paid only a fraction of the claim. In 1815, Augustus was appointed the first postmaster at Wellington Square. Along with William J. Kerr, he contributed land on which to build an Anglican church - St. Luke's Anglican Church built in 1834. Augustus died 6 June 1842 and is buried in St. Luke's Cemetery.,(A double stone, art/shield?)
