Presently used as a commercial site for several businesses.\" \" On Elizaebth is located one of the lder homes in the community which has not served as a residence for many years. Since 1907 the house at 478 Elizabeth has served as Burlington's Library. ... The old libraryis still kept in excellentcondition, but is now the place f business for a hairdresser, a ladies wear after-five fashion establishment, and a Karate School.\" (p. 19),Built for James and Christina Laing in 1873. In 1890 this property passed from James Laing's estate to his widow Christina. After her death it was purchased in 1902 by Dr Austin Hager Speers. According to a notice in the Burlington Gazette, September 10, 1902: \"Dr Speers is having extensive alterations made to the house he recently purchased from the Laing Estate.\" The 19 November 1902 Gazette Documented that \"Dr Speers is moving into his new house today. The Dr. will have one of the finest homes in the village. The building is fitted throughout with every convenience and will be lighted with electricity.\" In 1952, the property was purchased by the City from Dr Speers's estate and renovated to become the new location of the Burlington Public Library. The total cost of the purchase and renovations was $36,000, of which the Province contributed $12,000.
