He joined the British Army in 1777 fighting with General Burgoyne. He became acquainted with Joseph Brant and John Graves Simcoe. After the war George moved to Nova Scotia. Four of his seven Children and youth were born there to him and his wife Barbara McKenzie. In 1792 the family moved to Fort Erie to be near his brother John. Here, George became close friends with another Loyalist, Charles King. They soon bought adjoining lots at the Head-of-the-Lake - Chisholm's property bordered on Joseph Brant's. He soon became involved in local activities. He was a Freemason, along with Joseph Brant in the Barton Lodge of Hamilton, which was established in 1795. In 1796, he was appointed a Justice of the Peace by Governor Simcoe. In 1797, he was a commissioner of the first bridge built over the Old Outlet on the sand strip. Along with William Caus, he was a commissioner , as a representative of the British Government, for the treaty with the Mississauga Nation. This area became known as 'Brant's Block.' When the 2nd York Regiment (Militia) was organized in 1798 he became a Captain.
