Husband), who may have held the mortgage on the surveyed property. In 1882 the surveyed lots were auctioned by order of Thomas Miller, Judge of the Surrogate Court of Halton. Lots 41, 42 and 43 were bought by Mr and Mrs Charles Robinson Smith, for whom the original part of the house now at 1410 Ontario Street was built in 1884. The lots were bought in 1890 by Mr and Mrs Robert John Allen. This house, also dated in City records to 1884, was, like 1410 Ontario Steet, originally a frame structure, later bricked over. The 1910 GOAD insurance map shows a fence connecting the north-west and north-east corners of the two houses. This house was probably rebuilt by Allen in 1890. He later built the houses at 479 and 475 Burlington Avenue. The 1897 Voters List includes R. J. Allen, 'Furniture D[ealer]', as resident on lots 41, 42, and 43 on Ontario Street. 1909 Polling List: J. R. Allen, age 49, Carpenter, Ontario St and Burlington Ave, Lot 42 & 43 1910 GOAD Map: 21 Ontario 1916 Sewerage Works Plan: two lots west of Hager Creek, number 43, owned by L. J. Allen. 1919 Voters List includes R. J. Allen, Carpenter, and Sarah Allen, M[arried] W[oman], as resident on Lots 42 and 43, Burlington Avenue (this house); and Fred W. Allen, Electrician as resident on Lots 42 and 43, Ontario Street (probably 1410 Ontario). The 1922 telephone directory - found during the renovations of the house built by R. J. Allen at 479 Burlington Avenue - lists R. J. Allen and Fred Allen, Electrician, as residents on Burlington Avenue and Mrs George Allen as resident on Ontario Street. 1924 GOAD Map: 31 Ontario 1932 Burlington Directory: F. LACAC, Ontario Street Heritage Walking Tour, 1993. ARCHITECTURE: A one-and-a-half-storey building clad with dark stretcher-bond brick. The building has two distinct styles: one wing being Edwardian with the gable end facing the street and a hipped-roof bay on the first level; the other a Bungalow with the steep end-gabled roof coming down over the full front verandah, with a prominent shed dormer in the centre front. Windows are all segmental with radiating voussoirs and stone sills. The roof of the sheltered verandah has slightly arched cornices supported by massive brick pillars.
