It is said he was the second settler in East Flamborough - now known as the Aldershot area of Burlington. He received a tract of land, about 900 acres, that went from what is now LaSalle Park, westward to Grindstone Creek. Since the area had many oak trees, he called it Oaklands. Sources say the creek got its name from rocks in the creek bed that were used to make \"grindstones\" for sharpening axes. Along with his brother John, who immigrated in 1801, he built a gristmill and sawmill on Grindstone Creek that grew into a thriving business. After the War of 1812, William became very involved in local affairs. He was one of three commissioners for the Burlington Bay canal (1823 -1842); was appointed a Justice of the Peace for the District of Niagara; was a member of the land board that had jurisdiction over land grants, disputes and citizenship applications. He also donated land for the first school in the area - known as Applegarth School.
