Mary (nee Robertson) Pettit (1888 - 1961), a graduate of the Guelph General Hospital nursing school, married Harry Pettit and raised their sons Murray and William on the 200-acre family Farms and Farming on the south side of what is now the QEW, between Guelph Line and Walkers Line. Harry Pettit, Halton County clerk and treasurer, died in 1937. The Farms and Farminghouse, \"Prospect Lodge\", was turned into a tourist home, and the Farms and Farming was sold in 5-acre lots. In 1939 Mary Pettit was the first woman to be elected to municipal office in Nelson Township. She continued to be the \"first woman\", serving as councillor until 1945, when she was elected deputy reeve. In 1946 she was elected reeve. In 1949 she was appointed Halton County warden and also chairman of the county board of health. In the mid-1950s she moved to Milton and was elected to municipal offices there until her death."},{"label":"Contributor","value":"Karen Pettit"},{"label":"Date","value":"1949"},{"label":"Date (EDTF)","value":"D:00 M:00 Y:1949"},{"label":"Title","value":"Mrs. Mary S.
