Lot 17 was bought in 1921 by Archibald Cruse, who continued to live in Hamilton until the house was built two or three years later. 1923 School Section # 2 roll: Archibald Cruse, resident at 248 Wilson, Hamilton. 1924, 1925: still at 248 Wilson The Cruse family were members of the Salvation Army. Mr Cruse had two daughters & two sons (brothers?). 1935 Plan of the Kings Highway in the township of Flamboro East: Archibald Cruse Sold in 1941 to Joseph Foley; in 1944 to George & Florence Reaney. Florence Reaney had an outstanding contralto voice, and George was a pianist; they had a grand piano. Their daughter Joan attended the University of Toronto. Sold in 1956 to Andy & Elizabeth Perhach; in 1956 to George & Lillian Smith; in 1957 to Amelia Bateman; in 1959 to Nellie Schenkel; in 1967 to Frederick & Grace Carnie; in 1986/7 to Jeanette Whiting. ARCHITECTURE: This was originally a very attractive one-and-a-half-storey Craftsman Style Bungalow clad with dichromatic brick, with darker brick quoins and accented features clad with stuccoed aggregate. The hipped roof has three or four cross-gabled dormers. A flat-roofed roof porch with boxed cornice and wide frieze is supported on square posts on brick bases and Craftsman-style detail by the front steps. The entrance has sidelights. The slightly projecting bays on either side of the entrance, have groups of three narrow 4/1 wood sash windows and are clad with stuccoed aggregate. This pattern is repeated in the dormers. ENVIRONMENT: Set back from the road on a very deep lot. USABILITY: Converted into a non-conforming sixplex. INTEGRITY: Maintenance has declined since the 1980s. Aluminum storm door and windows. The mixed green-red asphalt roofing shingles and red eavestroughs and downspouts are well chosen for this house, but show deferred maintenance.
