Brant Street. A view looking north from James Street opposite the Civic Building.\" \"A first impression of Brant Street is one that regards it as a disaster area. ... Many of the businesses are presently occupying older homes which have been used as is, or have had an addition attached to the front.\" (p. 12) \"Presently Brant Street has two major problems; one is a business district struggling for survival and two is a street too narrow to handle its rush-hour traffic. This poses a big problem. How can the traffic situation be improved without causing the commercial situation to worsen?\" (p. 16) \"In the Burlington part of the study [on Regional Transportation], a downtown street system was recommended, with Brant Street from Lakeshore to Caroline Street closed to traffic. Off-street parking with access from either Locust or Elizabeth Streets. Elizabeth Street would be made one-way northbound and Locust one-way southbound. \" (pp. 16 - 17) The present variety in shopping facitilites is very lacking, and as a result the consumer heads for the big shopping malls that usually have big department stores, and more to choose from. (p. 17) By 1985, the population of Burlington will lkely be about 186,00, and the downtownarea will still have the appearance of a small town. Even cities of 30,000 usually have a more mature shopping district than Burlington has. The amalgamation of Aldershot and Nelson Township caused the town's population to increase so rapidly that the Brant Street business district did not have time on its side. ... Redevelopment both east and west of Brant Street will increase the population in the core area, but can this guarantee that people will naturally shop nearby? To attract shoppers a better supermarket, a good department store, and more variety of clothing stores is definitely needed. Personally, the only attaction in the core area is the banking facilities, the doctor's office, and the local Chrysler - Plymouth dealer. Seldom do the few other stores attract this person to the Brant Street area. The problem the town faces is 'How can they get retail and commercial development along this proposed pedestrian way when present business conditions are poor?'\""},{"label":"Contributor","value":"Mrs Barbara J.
