His father, Capt. Silas Hopkins, was fined 1000 pounds and imprisoned for three years for his loyalties to the Crown during the American Revolution. After his release he came north with his family - including 13 Children and youth, retainers and servants. The younger Children and youth rode in panniers on the cattle. They settled on land overlooking the north shore of Burlington Bay. Ephraim, along with his brothers Caleb, Joseph and Silas Jr. founded a hamlet at the four corners of Dundas Street on Guelph Line. The four corners grew into a busy little village and became known as Hannahsville, after Caleb's wife Hannah. During the War of 1812 he served from Apr. 25 to June 2, 1813. From Oct. 25 to 30 1813 he worked on Dundas Street. He was fined five Pounds between Dec. 1, 1814 and March 1, 1815, probably for being absent without permission. He married Martha Dildane in1811. They had seven Children and youth before her death giving birth to twins. In 1824, he married the widow Catherine (nee Crocker) Everett and moved to Van Wagners Beach. They had another seven Children and youth.
