After Alexander Brown built Browns Wharf (Port Flamborough) he built a private road tbetween the wharf and the mills in Waterdown, following roughly the west side of Lot 6 Con 1EF. Since a large part of this road was on Brown's own property, he built a toll gate and hotel, to collect tolls for the use of his road. He also operated the first Post Office in Aldershot from his Toll Gate Hotel. James Roderick operated the hotel and PO in the 1880s. The old Waterdown road was maintained by the public and used for years after the opening of Brown's road. -- Keith Thornborrow"},{"label":"Contributor","value":"Keith Thornborrow"},{"label":"Date","value":"1975"},{"label":"Date (EDTF)","value":"D:00 M:00 Y:1975"},{"label":"Title","value":"Old Waterdown and Port Flamboro Road, 1875"},{"label":"Repository","value":["Burlington Historical Society"]}],"description":"Old Waterdown and Port Flamboro Road, 1875","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/793dd96c-52f0-4a7c-97c1-dec91f8e1627/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"Old Waterdown and Port Flamboro Road, 1875","height":479,"width":585,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/793dd96c-52f0-4a7c-97c1-dec91f8e1627/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/793dd96c-52f0-4a7c-97c1-dec91f8e1627","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":512,"scaleFactors":[1,2]}]},"height":479,"width":585},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/793dd96c-52f0-4a7c-97c1-dec91f8e1627/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/793dd96c-52f0-4a7c-97c1-dec91f8e1627/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/793dd96c-52f0-4a7c-97c1-dec91f8e1627/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/logo"}
