During the American Revolution his father, Capt. Silas Hopkins, was fined 1000 pounds and imprisoned for three years for his loyalties to the Crown. After his release in 1801, he came north with his family, including 13 Children and youth, retainers and servants. The younger Children and youth rode in panniers on the cattle. They settled on land overlooking the north shore of Burlington Bay. On Feb. 17, 1808 Caleb married Hannah Green who was born in Grimsby. Caleb and three of his brothers - Ephraim, Joseph and Silas Jr. - founded a hamlet at the four corners of Dundas Street and Guelph Line. It grew into a busy little village and became known as Hannahsville, after Caleb's wife Hannah. In 1858 it was renamed Nelson to honour the British hero Lord Nelson. During the War of 1812, Caleb was a private in the 5th Lincoln Regiment in 2nd Flank Company. He was employed in building the barracks at Burlington Heights where the British military had decided to establish a military fort. (Dundurn Castle and the Hamilton Cemetery are located on Burlington Heights; 2014). He served a total of 34 days. After the war, Caleb became a Farms and Farminger and a politician. He played a major role in local affairs; he established the area's first school in 1828; he chaired the first township meeting for Nelson in 1836; was a prominent member of the Wesleyan Methodist Church. He was also the Reform Party representative in the Legislative Assembly for East Halton in 1828, 1833 and 1841. He later helped found the early Liberal Party, an off-shoot of the Reform Party, known as the \"Clear Grits\" - \"All Sand, No Dirt, clear Grit all the way through.\" He was a thorn in the side of the official Grit party. But Caleb lived long enough to become \"a grand old man of Ontario Liberalism\"- he died 8 Oct 1880. The party leadership attended his funeral in Toronto in strength. Pallbearers included the recently retired Liberal leader Alexander MacKenize and the then Premier of Ontario, Oliver Mowat. Burial was in the Toronto Necropolis Cemetery."},{"label":"Creator","value":"Pat Taylor, Compiler"},{"label":"Date","value":"2014"},{"label":"Date (EDTF)","value":"D:00 M:00 Y:2014"},{"label":"Title","value":"Caleb Hopkins (1786 - 1880) - War of 1812"},{"label":"Repository","value":["Burlington Historical Society"]}],"description":"Caleb Hopkins (1786 - 1880) - War of 1812","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/74e06983-4653-4999-bd11-0b67f5d35cb5/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"Caleb Hopkins (1786 - 1880) - War of 1812","height":1600,"width":1064,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/74e06983-4653-4999-bd11-0b67f5d35cb5/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/74e06983-4653-4999-bd11-0b67f5d35cb5","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":512,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4]}]},"height":1600,"width":1064},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/74e06983-4653-4999-bd11-0b67f5d35cb5/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/74e06983-4653-4999-bd11-0b67f5d35cb5/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/74e06983-4653-4999-bd11-0b67f5d35cb5/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/logo"}
