In 1781, Davis welcomed General Cornwallis and his British troops, including Major John Graves Simcoe's Queens Rangers to his property. After the British retreat, US Patriots destroyed the plantation. In the summer of 1792 the Davis family, including their eldest daughter and her husband, Thomas Gant/Ghent, joined together in the arduous emigration to Upper Canada, riding horseback and transporting their worldly goods in oxen carts. Some slaves also came with them. They arrived at trail's end at the mouth of the Genessee River (now Rochester). Asahel and Thomas went on to Chippewa to meet with John Graves Simcoe. Simcoe remembered them from North Carolina and sent a gunboat to transfer the families and their wagons to Chippewa. They stayed there for a short time. After the death of his mother, the Davis family moved to Saltfleet Township receiving a 500-acre land grant. (The present day [2014] community of Stoney Creek is in Saltfleet Township.) Their next-door neighbour was Thomas Ghent and his family. William built a large plantation-style house called \"Harmony Hall\" and planted orchards with apple and peach seedlings brought from North Carolina.
