Miller had previously been Reeve of Nelson Township (1855 - 67), Warden of Halton County (1855, 1857 - 61 and 1864 - 66), Township Clerk, and Clerk of the Sixth Divisional Court. Robert Miller moved into the village just one year after the incorporation of Wellington Square and Port Nelson as the Village of Burlington, and seven years before Bunton's Survey was registered in 1881. The house was built by George Blair, who also built a second house (now 1461 - 3 Ontario St) for Miller. It appears that this house was built between 1874 and 1881, and is therefore the earliest known house by master builder George Blair. The nearby Kentner House (468 Locust St) and many notable houses on Burlington Avenue were all built by him in the 1880s. After Miller's death in 1880, his widow continued to live in the house until 1907, when it was sold to William Little. Miller, Robert Esq., Obituary in the Canadian Champion, 26 Aug 1880: He was born in County Down near Belfast, Ireland in 1819. He was 61 May 5 last. His father, the late Thomas Miller, emigrated with his family in 1827 and settled on a Farms and Farming near Zimmerman. Robert was educated at Dundas and in 1836 he started to study medicine. He served in the rebellion, helping to put it down. He spent 1839 - 1850 in manufacturing, then succeeded his father on the Farms and Farming. He was Commissioner of the Peace, in 1851 Councillor of the Township of Nelson. In 1855 he was Reeve of Nelson and Warden of the County at the separation of Halton and Wentworth, and up to 1867 with the exception of two years. He became Clerk of the Sixth Division Court. so moved to Nelson village. In 1874 he was Collector of Customs for the Port of Welllington Square, and moved there, where he died. He leaves a wife, two Children and youth, three brothers including Judge Miller of Milton. Burial took place at the Presbyterian Church cemetery near Nelson Village. Canadian Champion, 16 September 1880: Nelson Council minutes: Record sense of loss on the death of the late Clerk and Treasurer, Robert Miller, Esq., August 23. It was moved that one year's salary be paid the widow. In 1910 the property was bought by George Bush, who came to Burlington in that year. George Bush owned a business on Brant Street dealing in saddles, harness, blankets, valises and other travelling goods. He and his wife had four sons: Melvyn, who became City Clerk, Harvey, Ernest, and Orman. In 1921 Orman Bush opened his own business on Brant Street, supplying men's furnishings. Bush's Mens Wear, still in business on Brant Street, is one of the longest established retail firms in Downtown Burlington. The present owner, Winston Howell, is the son-in-law of Orman Bush. Mr Howell senior, who came to Burlington in 1933, was the owner of a hardware business on Brant Street (Grant's hardware). The Bush Children and youth were Helen, who married Winston \"Win\" Howell, Melvyn (lived at 1445 Ontario), Harvey, Ernie, and Ormie, who started his business in 1921. In 1936 the residence was sold to Dr Russell Dingle and converted into a doctor's office and apartment. He and his brother Lloyd, a lawyer, were sons of R. W. Dingle, a butcher on Brant Street. Mary Robson recalls: \"Russell married Dorothy Appleford, whose parents lived on Lakeshore Road east of Guelph Line and operated Appleford Paper Products. They had two Children and youth, Bruce and Lesley. Russell served in the Medical Corps in the First World War and was a member of the Burlington Lions Club. The neighbours always knew when he had an emergency call, because he drove the fastest car in town. [Police] Chief Lee Smith [who lived on the south side of Ontario Street, opposite Dr Dingle's house] probably closed his eyes when Dr Dingle sped down the street. Dr Dingle's office was housed in the side addition. His telephone number was 770. \"Lloyd D. Dingle operated a law practice in Burlington for many years. When John Paul Charlebois was acquired as a partner, it became Dingle and Charlebois. Both Dingle brothers were kind and caring gentlemen, well respected in the community. Lloyd was also a member of the Burlington Lions Club.\""},{"label":"Contributor","value":"Chris Bryan"},{"label":"Creator","value":"Chris Bryan"},{"label":"Date","value":"Aug-08"},{"label":"Date (EDTF)","value":"D:08 M:01 Y:2008"},{"label":"Title","value":"1457 Ontario Street, 2008"},{"label":"Repository","value":["Burlington Historical Society"]}],"description":"1457 Ontario Street, 2008","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/6ed515e7-0b1f-41e9-8320-0a0e98de52f5/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"1457 Ontario Street, 2008","height":1200,"width":1600,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/6ed515e7-0b1f-41e9-8320-0a0e98de52f5/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/6ed515e7-0b1f-41e9-8320-0a0e98de52f5","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":512,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4]}]},"height":1200,"width":1600},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/6ed515e7-0b1f-41e9-8320-0a0e98de52f5/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/6ed515e7-0b1f-41e9-8320-0a0e98de52f5/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/6ed515e7-0b1f-41e9-8320-0a0e98de52f5/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/logo"}
