They had originally emigrated from Germany to the American colonies. Nichols was the first settler to buy land from Joseph Brant: 200 acres on the east side of Brant Street. The house was hospitable to visitors, including First Nations travelers, who would sleep by the fire, rise early and quietly leave before their hosts woke up. During the War of 1812, Jacob served a total of 55 days. He served Nov. 25 to Dec. 19, 1812 and Aug. 27 to Sept. 1, 1813. He worked on Dundas Street on Oct. 27 and 28, 1813. He was at Burlington Heights, where the British Military had decided to build a fort, from July 25 to Aug. 5, 1814. Dundurn Castle and the Hamilton Cemetery are located on Burlington Heights; (2014) Jacob was fined 5 pounds between Dec. 1, 1814 and Mar. 1, 1815, probably for being absent without permission.
