Aldershot Florist bought stock from other area growers as well. Russ Jaggard was operating a fruit stand on Plains Road around 1951. Jaggards were growing bedding plants as well and some flowering plants which Aldershot Florist purchased on occasion for resale at Easter etc. A few years later Russ built a florist shop of his own , the second for the Aldershot area, with his daughter Connie as designer. Aldershot Florist purchased dish gardens from a Mr. {Fred] Whiskin located on Ghent Avenue, Burlington. The cut flowers, floral greens and florist supplies came from two major wholesale suppliers, Dale's and Ivey's. Aldershot Florist became affiliated with Florist Telegraph Delivery (FTD) and Welcome Wagon, and was involved in floral shows, trade shows and demonstration events to promote its designs. We supplied thousands of geraniums to Hamilton cemeteries. White Chapel was the biggest user of canna lilies and geraniums. We started geraniums from cuttings. Each fall we would go to the Cemetery , pull all the geraniums out by their roots and haul them by truck back to a darkened section of the greenhouse were they were covered with heavy tarps and straw. The canna lilies were also collected before they where frozen, topped and taken to the greenhouse to be tarped. After the heat was turned on the tarp was removed from the cannas and the tubers were cut up with at least one eye. The tuber pieces were then placed in prepared soil-filled clay pots and put under the benches to spout. The pulled geranium plants were uncovered and the best cuttings were taken to be placed in trays of wet sand for rooting. After rooting they were transplanted to individual 3\"or 4\" prepared clay pots. In those days plastic pots and trays were unheard of. We grew a wide variety of annual flower plants as well, specializing in petunias. Working with Glover Basket Co in Burlington, F.A. Thornborrow test-marketed small wooden boxes for boxing bedding plants. Glover Basket then produced these wooden bedding plant boxes by the thousands for a expanding bedding plant industry in bales of 500 which were the precursor of today's plastic cell packs."},{"label":"Contributor","value":"Keith Thornborrow"},{"label":"Creator","value":"F.
