St Phillipe Roman Catholic Church at Locust and Ontario Streets, formerly the old Calvary Baptist Church. Established in 1875.\",The Church was built in 1875 by James Cushie Bent, an important early builder who also constructed the neighbouring frame houses, 1442 and 1436 Ontario Street, both of which are designated under the Ontario Heritage Act. All three buildings are built in distinctive composite styles which blend Victorian vernacular traditions with strongly individual design elements. The Church blends a simple Gothic Revival style - evident in the Gothic-arched windows and door - with an Italianate square tower with bulls-eye windows. The tower is set diagonally in the front facade, strongly emphasizing the diagonal placement of the Church in relation to the intersection of Locust Street and Ontario Street. The design elements are picked out in dichromatic brick, which is quite unusual in Burlington. The corners and windows are outlined by a dentillated trim of buff brick, and the tower is emphasized by a horizontal band of dichromatic chevrons. A pronounced cornice tops the tower. The \"Carpenter Gothic\" style is represented in the front-gable \"gingerbread\" trim (now missing). From the 1850s, the Regular Baptists of Wellington Square met in James Cushie Bent's small frame house, now 507 Elizabeth Street. It is believed that Baptist immersions were preformed in Rambo Creek, which runs through that property. In 1875 the land for the new church was bought from George Blair by Bent and others, Trustees of the Regular Baptist Church. In 1884 Bent purchased the lot neighbouring the Church, at 1442 Ontario Street, and in 1888 built a house for himself, which he deeded to the Church to become the Manse after his death in 1895. However, it did not then become the Manse, as Bent's sister occupied it and apparently assumed that she had inherited it."},{"label":"Contributor","value":"Mrs Barbara J.
