Part of the ally of locust trees, said to have been planted by the first Rector's wife, Kate Green, can be seen on either side of the green avenue to the Lake.,St Luke's Anglican Church, built in 1834, was the first church in Wellington Square. The land, part of Brant's Block, was donated jointly by Augustus Bates and Elizabeth Brant Kerr, and is said to have been a sacred native burial ground. The cemetery predates the church by a few years. Originally a frame church, of post-and-beam construction, somewhat box-shaped, the interior had balconies along two walls, with free benches for those who did not rent pews on the ground floor. The choir sat in a second-storey alcove below the steeple, and the pulpit was reached by a winding staircase. The exterior was originally clad with wooden siding, and the windows were rectangular. In 1894 the first renovation introduced a new chancel, a sanctuary, an organ loft, and a stained glass window. In 1888/89 the roof was removed and replaced with a more steeply pitched roof. A single bell housing replaced the spire. The exterior walls were shortened, removing the balcony level, and the windows were replaced with small gothic style lancet windows.
