Plan 111, J. C. and M. C. Smith's Subdivision, was registered in 1906. In 1910 this lot was sold to Herbert R. McCay by O. T. Springer, who had owned the Farms and Farming on the opposite side of Brant Street. In 1924, Springer built a retirement house for himself at 539 Locust Street, on p[art lots 16 and 17, immediately to the west of this lot. 1916 Sewerage Works Plan: the residence of Herbert McCay. 1919 Voters List: H. R. McCay, (retired) gentleman, at Lot 2, Brant Street. 1910 GOAD Map: 20 Brant; 1924 GOAD Map: 93 Brant ARCHITECTURE: A two-and-a-half storey brick structure in Edwardian vernacular style. The high hipped roof is broken by a large offset front gable with a small Palladian window. Above the entrance a projecting bay window. On the other side of the front elevation, a slight projection with large shallow-arched windows at each level. Compare 518 Brant Street. ENVIRONMENT: Contributes to the streetscape of the west side of Brant Street, serving as a buffer for the residential neighbourhood of Locust Street. USABILITY: Adapted for commercial use. INTEGRITY: The brick has been cleaned and the windows replaced.
