Around 1799, the family moved to Upper Canada settling on the Canadian north shore of Lake Erie near Elizabeth's family. Seven years later they moved to Nelson Township. Little is known about Joseph's life in Nelson. We know that during the War of 1812 he served in the 2nd Flank Company of the 2nd York Militia. Research is ongoing.
