In 1810 the lot was granted by the Crown to Larkin, who sold it in that year to ... Conger. It was bought in 1832 by John McCallum; in 1850 by Jackson Featherstone. The house was built in 1850 by Jackson Featherstone, who had come with his family - his father Ralph (1781 - 1882), his mother, and brother - from Stanhope in Weardale, England, to Canada in 1832 and settled in Flamborough. As the family walked north from Port Nelson, the eleven-year-old Jackson was so impressed with this location at the intersection of Brant and Dundas Streets that when he came of age in 1846, he purchased 260 acres of land on either side of Dundas Street. The 1861 Census lists Ralph Featherstone, C. of E. retired Gentleman, age 79, living with his wife Mary, age 77, with their son Jackson, age 43, on Lot 20, Con 1. The 1871 Census shows Jackson age 43; the 1881 Census has him age 52, born in England. In 1877 it is shown as the property of Jackson Featherstone in the Halton Illustrated Atlas. The Farms and Farming was later divided between his two sons: one keeping the house and land NDS and the other taking 135 acres SDS. In 1889 this son planted \"Surprise Winter Wheat\", a sheaf of which won first prize at the Chicago Exposition in 1890. In 1902 the property was occupied by Fred Featherstone (age 27), E. H. Featherstone (age 24), Farms and Farmingers, and Sarah Featherstone (widow): 160 acres SDS and 99 acres NDS (City assessement rolls). Around 1920 Fred's grandson {?} Frederick (called Max) was challenged by his father to go back to school or to train a string of unbroken western draught horses. Max did not return to school, but became a well-known trainer of trotting and pacing horses, particularly ones that were difficult to handle. The Farms and Farming sign, \"Featherstone Sales Stables\", cut in the shape of a horse, is now in the Ontario Agricultural Museum. This part of the Featherstone property was sold in 1920 to Arthur Gibbon ... in 1968 it was sold to B. Richards, the present owner. Turcotte, Memories of Pioneer Days, pp. 88 - 9. ARCHITECTURE: A one-and-a-half storey Farms and Farminghouse constructed of rough-cut stone laid in a random fashion. Original building with T-shaped gable roof with wide verges. Six-over-six wood sash windows with dressed stone sills. The front entrance is protected by a two storey verandah supported by doric columns. ENVIRONMENT: The house is concealed from view. Attractive modern landscaping. USABILITY: INTEGRITY: The house has been much altered: a rear wing addition with a high pitched roof is now the entrance. A large garage at the side has an apartment at the upper level. The buildings have been clad with stone and are well maintained.
