He lived at Grimsby from 1801 to 1806. He then returned to Pennsylvania to marry. He returned with Catherine and in 1806 drew a Lot 16 Con 1 NSD. Today (2014) that would be on the west side of Guelph Line from Dundas Street north to the first Sideroad. During the War of 1812 he held the rank of Sergeant. He was not selected, at age 34, for service in a flank company. He served in the militia from Oct. 17 to Nov. 24, 1812; again from Sept. 21 to Oct 8, 1813. He worked for 4 days on Dundas Street in Oct. 1813. He was 'on command,' at Burlington Heights in July 1814 from the 4th to 24th. Burlington Heights was where the British military had decided to build a fort. Dundurn Castle and the Hamilton Cemetery are located on Burlington Heights today (2014). He served again Nov. 5 to 12, 1814. He was recommended for promotion to Ensign in 1816 because of his distinguished service late in the war. In 1830, he donated land for the Nelson Methodist Episcopal Church and cemetery. In 1851, the McCays moved to the Jersey settlement in Ancaster Township. He died, at the home of his son who pre-deceased him, on 19 Oct. 1863, aged 85 years, 8 months 8 days.
