He married Jane McCormick in New York. In 1806, one of their daughters was born in Richard Beasley's home on Burlington Heights (near where Dundurn Castle is located today; 2014). That same year, he leased land in Nelson Township - Lot 6 Con 3 SDS. His lot would be on the west side of present day Appleby Line from about the QEW to Lakeshore Rd. During the War of 1812, John was a private. At the age of 43, he was not selected for service in a flank company. He was listed as deserted from Oct. 25 to Nov. 24, 1812. (Deserted, as in \"absent without leave,\" not as\"deserted to the enemy\") He served from Sept. 24 to Oct 8, 1813. He worked on Dundas Street Oct 28 and 29, 1813. He then served from Nov. 28 to Dec. 4. He was at Burlington Heights, July 4 to 29, 1814 where the British Military had established a fort. Dundurn Castle and Hamilton Cemetery are located on Burlington Heights (2014). He served a total of 62 days. John died in Nov. 1843 in Nelson Township.
