They lived on the north side of Burlington Bay. He married Elizabeth Brant, daughter of Joseph Brant (Thayendanegea) and they had four sons and one daughter. During the War of 1812, William Kerr was an officer in the Indian Department. Along with John Brant and John Norton he led the Six Nations forces in defeating the Americans at both Queenston Heights and Beaver Dams. Late in the war (possibly at the Battle of Lundy's Lane), Kerr was captured and spent some time at Cheshire, Mass. as a prisoner of war. Following in the footsteps of his father, William became a member of the Masonic Barton Lodge No. 6 in Hamilton. After the war, he had a busy life in politics and with the Six Nations. Among other things, he was elected to the Assembly of Upper Canada in 1820. In 1832, following the death of John Brant, the head chief of the Confederacy, Kerr, as Brant's son-in-law probably had increased influence within the Six Nations. As was the right of William's mother-in-law, Catherine Brant, to name John Brant's successor, she chose her infant grandson, the Kerr's son, William Simcoe Kerr. William and Elizabeth were devoted members of the Church of England and when it was decided to build a church in Wellington Square, it was Kerr who donated, along with Augustus Bates, the needed land. This became St. Luke's Anglican Church, still standing in downtown Burlington on Ontario Street (2014). William died 23 April 1845. His wife died two days later. At that time they were living in the house that Joseph Brant had built at Wellington Square. (A replica of this house, near the site of the original house, is now Burlington's Joseph Brant Museum:2014) The burial site of William and Elizabeth Kerr can be found just west of the front doors of the historic church in St. Luke's Anglican Church Cemetery.,In Memory of CAPT.
