The Burlington Historical Society plaque is between the upper two windows.,This structure was built in 1872 for Absalom Bell Cline, horticulturalist. After 1914 it became E.J. Dickenson, Confectioner; Johnston's Candy Store in 1924 and in 1948 Watson's Jewellers.Since 1980 it has been the home of Tumblehome. The building seen on the left was formerly the location of the Coffee Pot restaurant, owned and operated by Frank Rodgers. From the recollections of Bernice Allen, the daughter of Edward Dickenson and Ella Coleman: \"My father Edward Dickenson, born Haltwhistle, near Newcastle, England, came to Canada at an early age and started working on a Farms and Farming at age 10 ... eventually worked for the TH&B railway and lost a leg in a rail accident at Port Credit. Following that for a while he was station agent for the Radial Cars, which travelled from Hamilton and crossed Brant Street passing the Sherwood Hotel, formerly the Queens Hotel [now 400 Brant Street}. \"Sometime after that, about 1916-1917 he opened a confectionary store at Brant Street -- opposite [the present] Sherwood Hotel. The store also contained an old-fashioned ice cream parlour, for which he made his own delicious ice cream. Banana [flavoured ice cream] was made with real genuine bananas. He also dipped his own chocolates. I asked one of his emplyeees, who died a few years ago, what they were paid? She said $5 a week in Winter and a little more in summer, and my father was a generous man. \"Wealthy people from Hamilton had cottages at Burlington Beach at that time and frequently partook of all the goodies.
