In the summer of 1792, he and his wife Elizabeth, eldest daughter of William and Hannah Davis, joined the Davis family, including their son Asahel, in the arduous emigration to Upper Canada, riding horseback and transporting their worldly goods in oxen carts. Some slaves also came with them. They arrived at trail's end at the mouth of the Genessee River (now Rochester). Somewhere between North Carolina and Upper Canada, the spelling of Thomas' last name changed from Gant to Ghent. Thomas and Asahel Davis went on to Chippewa to meet with John Graves Simcoe. Simcoe remembered them from North Carolina and sent a gunboat to transfer the families and their wagons to Chippewa. They stayed there for a short time. In 1804, Thomas purchased 200.5 acres from Joseph Brant. His next-door neighbour - Asahel Davis. At the outbreak of the War of 1812, Thomas, at age 42, was not selected for service in a flank company. Thomas died in 1824 and is buried in the Union Burial Ground - on land that was part of Asahel Davis' Farms and Farming.,THOMAS GHENT U.E.L.
