On Aug. 16, 1812 he was recorded sick while serving under Captain Samuel Hatt at the occupation of Detroit. He served from Sept. 25 to Dec. 19 1812 and again from Sept. 21 to Oct. 8, 1813. He worked on Dundas Street Oct. 24 and 25, 1813. He was at Hutes Haus near St. David's July 4 to 24, 1814 and then went immediately to Burlington Heights where the British military had decided to build a fort. (Hamilton Cemetery and Dundurn Castle are located on Burlington Heights; 2014). He was there from July 25 to 30 and again in Nov. from 5 to the 12. In total he served 103 days. His life was a very troubled one. Early in his life he was shot by his brother. This brother died while serving his sentence in the Kingston Penitentiary. Thomas married Mary Thatcher, daughter of John Thatcher and Mary Feltcher of Saltfleet. (The present day, 2014, community of Stoney Creek is in Saltfleet Township.) He shot his daughter, who survived and he did five years in the Kingston Pen. Later he married or lived with Martha Potts and then Ellen Unk. In 1857, in a drunken quarrel he shot and killed Ellen and a niece who lived with them. The niece lived long enough to name him as the murderer.
