The fron entrance was centered on the view south on Burlington Avenue to Lake Ontario, necessitating a jog in the avenue. The brick is said to have been the first pressed brick brought from the Milton brick works. Elizabth's brother John, a retired gentleman, lived her in the 1890s, and the property was beuqeathed in her will to Melvin John Ireland. Mary (nee Kirby) Robson (1929 - 1912) recalled the sounds of pitching horsehoes from Mr Ireland's barn, from when she was a child visiting her Grandmother Gilbert on Burlington Avenue. The men of the neighbourhood gathered there for games on summer evenings. Her father, Jack Kirby, had boarded with the Irelands when he was a bachelor. Mary also recalls enjoying milk and cookies, Mrs Ireland's \"best ever\" sugar cookies, while sitting at the dining table, over which hung a Tiffany style lamp.
