The property was part of Peter Redpath's registered survey plan for development in 1878, but it was not until after the installation of water mains and sewers in 1919 that Caroline Street began to attract more village residents, under the resubdivision plan registered in 1921 by Hughes Cleaver. From 1886 to 1903 the property was owned and Farms and Farminged by Francis R. and Annie Jane Davidson. In 1921 Hughes Cleaver sold this parcel of land with the house to Howard and Mary Sheppard. \"Hud\" Sheppard was a popular butcher, with a shop on Brant Street, and also one of the town's great all-round athletes. The house is a one-and-a-half storey frame structure on a rubblestone foundation. It was originally oriented east - west, with the main entrance to the north side of the west elevation. The south elevation has two large bay windows which are unusual and notable features. A 1919 map shows the enclosed porch at the west entrance and a south-west corner verandah, now lost. In the 1920s an inside bathroom was installed on the second floor, and two front dormers enlarging the front bedroom were probably added at that time. A two-storey rear addition replaced the original summer kitchen circa 1950. The exterior is now stuccoed. This Victorian Farms and Farminghouse makes a strong heritage contribution to an architecturally varied residential district and streetscape of Caroline Street."},{"label":"Creator","value":"Pat Taylor"},{"label":"Date","value":"2012"},{"label":"Date (EDTF)","value":"D:00 M:00 Y:2012"},{"label":"Title","value":"2161 Caroline, Burlington, ON"},{"label":"Repository","value":["Burlington Historical Society"]}],"description":"2161 Caroline, Burlington, ON","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/34d12300-ca53-4cad-8ebc-8a1d02e92092/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"bhs_203513-1","height":533,"width":800,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/1dfe7d69-364b-43ed-b292-8a8625654078/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/1dfe7d69-364b-43ed-b292-8a8625654078","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":512,"scaleFactors":[1,2]}]},"height":533,"width":800},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/34d12300-ca53-4cad-8ebc-8a1d02e92092/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/1dfe7d69-364b-43ed-b292-8a8625654078/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}},{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/34d12300-ca53-4cad-8ebc-8a1d02e92092/canvas/_2","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"bhs_203513-2","height":533,"width":800,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/c2523d51-96ec-4cfa-ad27-9438802889e3/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/c2523d51-96ec-4cfa-ad27-9438802889e3","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json"},"height":533,"width":800},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/34d12300-ca53-4cad-8ebc-8a1d02e92092/canvas/_2","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/c2523d51-96ec-4cfa-ad27-9438802889e3/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/1dfe7d69-364b-43ed-b292-8a8625654078/full/300,300/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/logo"}
