In 1854 Survey Plan 12, the Village of Wellington Square, was registered. In 1855 Lot 15 of that Plan passed to James G. Bent, a builder. In 1874 Plan 61, the Village of Wellington Square, was registered. In 1872/73, Lot 2 in Block B of this Plan, 1/5 acre, was sold toJames Edward Moore, who took a mortgage to James Bent. In 1875 it was sold to Edward Williamson. Edward Williamson was a carpenter, coffin maker and then funeral director whose shop was on Brant Street. His business dated from 1877 (From Pathway to Skyway, p. 193.). His son Edgar opened his funeral home at 372-4 Brant Street and later lived at 458 Locust Street. Edward was the son of William Williamson, who had come to Canada at the age of 4, with his family, from Yorkshire; see Turcotte, Memories of Pioneer Days, pp. 158 - 159. 1903 Assessment Roll: Edward Williamson, Builder, age 56, John St Block B, Lot 2 (shop & barn) 1903 Assessment Roll: Christopher Curry, Laborer, age 42, John St Block B, Lot 4 1903 Assessment Roll: Mrs Ann Kerns, Widow, John St, Block B, Lot 3 1903 Assessment Roll: Frederick Knife, Painter, age 49, John St, Block B, Lot 1; owner Robert Sheppard, Waterdown In the 1910 GOAD Map, Lot 2 is the site of a Carpenter Shop, partly open. A wooden bridge over the creek running down Elizabeth Street links the carpenter shop to what are now 507 and 511 Elizabeth Street, both built by Jabez Bent in the 1850s or 1860s. 1917, 1918, 1922 Telephone Directory: I. J. Heldman, residence, John Street 1919 Voters List: Edith Finnemore, Spinster, John Street (added name). I J. Heldman, Agent, Part Lot 9, John Street. 1920 Sewerage Plan: Lot 2, E. Williamson In 1921/22, Williamson sold the north part of his property to Irwin Heldman, and in 1924, Williamson sold this property to Mary Ann [sic] Finnemore. W. H. Finnemore, owner of a flour mill, was the first Chairman of the Library Board in 1872. 1924 GOAD Map: Lot 2 has two houses: this was 84 John St., 2 storey brick, 3rd storey wood, and there was a twin to this house at 86 JohnSt., to the north. 1927 Voters List: Miss E. Finnemore, Spinster, Part Lot 9, 84 John Street. I. J. Heldman, Agent & Mrs L. Heldman, MW, Lot 10, 86 John Street. In 1947 from Edith Finnemore's estate to Jane & George William Harding; in 1964 it passed from their estate to Elwood James Harding; in that year sold to William Ashton & wife, who operated a fish and chip business here; in 1998 (?) to Martin Metherell. ARCHITECTURE: A two-and-a-half-storey square-plan Edwardian structure originally clad with brick. The hipped roof has an offset gable which was originally clad with wood shingles. ENVIRONMENT: Between a small two-level strip mall and a City-owned parking lot. USABILITY: Adapted for combined commercial and residential use. INTEGRITY: The front verandah had been removed and replaced with a small add-on porch. Other alterations included rear additions, side vents for fish-and-chip frying fumes, aluminum awnings, replacement windows, angelstone cladding at the front first level., and aluminum eaves. The renovations by Martin Metherell included a return of the front verandah (enclosed), which greatly improved the proportions of the front elevation, and a new stucco surface.
