Built in 1911 by John Wray as a residence for T. W. (Thomas William) Snelling, this house was offered at a public auction sale in 1915. It was bought by Charles Finlay Coleman, brother of Burlington's most eminent builder and developer A. B. Coleman. Charles Coleman continued to live three blocks away on Ontario Street, in \"Idlewyld\", which in 1902 was described as \"one of the prettiest and most beautifully situated homes in Burlington\". In 1918 he was elected Mayor of Burlington, and in 1919 he sold this property to William Christopherson. It remained in the Christopherson family until 1952. The original house was a one-and-a-half-storey stuccoed structure. Its foundation is rubblestone, parged with a cement stucco which has incised lines representing freestone masonry. Another Burlington house with this incised stucco treatment is 445 Nelson Avenue, which was built in 1886 for the Chisholm brothers,George and Charles. Under the Christopherson ownership, the one-storey stuccoed structure was transformed into an Arts and Crafts Style Bungalow. Christopherson, a machnist who worked at Nicholson's lumber and milling business, had the exterior walls reclad with narrow wooden clapboard siding, with mitred siding corners. A full-front open verandah was added, with a foundation and steps constructed of concrete and large cobblestones. The stone masonry is similar to that of the Indian Point Gates, built for A. B. Coleman in 1929, by a Mr Cuttriss. The verandah was later enclosed with well-designed eight-paned mullioned sash windows. Made-to-measure custom windows were a specialty of Nicholson's; before 1910, windows were made on site by the builder. Between 1994 and 1997 the present owners removed, stripped to bare wood, reputtied and repainted the sashes and frames of all the original exterior windows. The exterior clapboard siding, fascia, and soffits were repaired and repainted. The excellence of this project of preserving and restoring the original details and materials, so important to the architectural beauty and integrity of this structure, was recognized in 1988 by a LACAC Heritage Award. Removed in 2012 from the Heritage Burlington heritage property registry, for alleged lack of historical, architectural, or contextual value."},{"label":"Creator","value":"Pat Taylor"},{"label":"Date","value":"Aug-12"},{"label":"Date (EDTF)","value":"D:00 M:00 Y:2012"},{"label":"Title","value":"517 Hurd Avenue, 2012"},{"label":"Repository","value":["Burlington Historical Society"]}],"description":"517 Hurd Avenue, 2012","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/2b1d8698-b498-4db3-a17a-72da095c4b1f/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"517 Hurd Avenue, 2012","height":1064,"width":1600,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/2b1d8698-b498-4db3-a17a-72da095c4b1f/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/2b1d8698-b498-4db3-a17a-72da095c4b1f","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":512,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4]}]},"height":1064,"width":1600},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/2b1d8698-b498-4db3-a17a-72da095c4b1f/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/2b1d8698-b498-4db3-a17a-72da095c4b1f/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/2b1d8698-b498-4db3-a17a-72da095c4b1f/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/logo"}
