The tower is set diagonally in the front facade, strongly emphasizing the diagonal placement of the Church in relation to the intersection of Locust Street and Ontario Street. The design elements are picked out in dichromatic brick, which is quite unusual in Burlington. The corners and windows are outlined by a dentillated trim of buff brick, and the tower is emphasized by a horizontal band of dichromatic chevrons. A pronounced cornice tops the tower.,Built in 1875 as Calvary Baptist Church by James Cushie Bent, an important early builder who also constructed the neighbouring frame houses, 1442 Ontario Street and 1436 Ontario Street. All three buildings are built in distinctive composite styles which blend Victorian vernacular traditions with strongly individual design elements. From the 1850s, the Regular Baptists of Wellington Square met in James Cushie Bent's small frame house, now 507 Elizabeth Street. It is believed that Baptist immersions were preformed in Rambo Creek, which runs through that property. In 1875 the land for the new church was bought from George Blair by Bent and others, Trustees of the Regular Baptist Church. In 1930, when Calvary Baptist Church withdrew from the Convention of Ontario and Quebec, some members left to form a new congregation, which eventually built the Burlington Baptist Church at Bridgman and New Streets in 1954. Calvary Baptist Church was active until 1967 under the Fellowship of Evangelical Baptist Churches. In 1968 the building was bought by the Roman Catholic Church to serve the francophone congregation as L'Eglise St Philippe.
