Built in 1850 or earlier for Dr Nathaniel Bell (1789 - 1859), the first licensed medical doctor in Halton County. His medical certificate is dated March 16, 1819 (National Archives). Nathaniel married 1) Sarah, daughter of John Cline (Hamilton) & Catherine Browse; 2) Mary Ann, widow of William B. O'Reilly. Sarah (Cline) Bell was granted 200 acres on her marriage to Nathaniel in 1822 . Their 9 Children and youth included Catherine, Benjamin, Elizabeth, Mary, Permela and Delos Cline Bell, the portrait artist. In 1856 this house was rented by the congregation of St Paul's Presbyterian Church for their minister, who could watch the new manse being built nearby. In 1885, John Bunton became Postmaster and stayed in this office until his death in 1911. Later, his wife Eliza was Postmistress until her death in 1936. According to his daughter Beatrice, John Bunton bought the house in 1880 from Edwin Dalton (who donated the land for the Knox Presbyterian Church manse at \"the Sixteen\"). Beatrice recalled that Tansley was \"quite densley populated ... a grist mill operated beside the creek and a lumber mill was set up near her home\". Miss Bunton taught at Nelson for 5 years, then for 16 years at Tansley until her retirement in 1939.
