Front row: George Thorpe, Helen Lindley, Nancy Thorpe, Bill Walker and John Lindley. The house in the background on Brant Street has not beeen identified. It may have been the house that Helen and Dr Martin Langford lived in at the corner of Brant Street and Victoria Avenue, over the 32 years that he practised as a general medical practitioner (ca 1957 to 1989). It has been demolished. 2017 - Brian Thorpe donated another copy of this photo, identified as \"August 1935 - Thorpe/Lindley Fathering\",The house at 1454 Birch Avenue was built before 1915 for Edwin and Elizabeth Thorpe when they retired from Farms and Farminging. They had bought part of the John Collinson Farms and Farming on Maple Avenue in 1887. Murray Fisher, in \"Farewell to the Garden of Canada\" (1984), comments: \"[Edwin Thorpe], followed by sons Percy and George and grandsons Murray Allan, George and Harold, established a reputation hard to beat as expert fruit and vegetable growers for nearly 75 years on Maple Ave. Owing to pressure from the town and developers this family are out of business here. It is doubtful if there is any measured mile of soil in Canada more productive than Maple Avenue... It is with great regret ... that this great natural asset of our country ... should be lost forever to the unquenchable desire to cover choice land with cement and macadam. Within a few miles there is land that is replaceable but that fact has been ignored in the scramble for dollars.\" This family group probably also includes Edwin and Bessie's son Charles, who in 1929 was appointed manager of the Dominion Bank, Gage Avenue, Hamilton, and moved to Hamilton. According to Dorothy Turcotte, Memories of Pioneer Days, pp. 180 - 1, Edwin Thorpe was born in 1848 in Lands End, England. On board ship, emigrating to Canada, he met Elizabeth Anderson, en route to meeting her parents in Palermo. Thorpe moved to Hamilton and found employment as a gardener and teamster for the Hendrie family. Elizabeth was employed as a maid in the Hendrie household. They saved their earnings and in 1877 married and purchased their first Farms and Farming on the Plains Road, where St Matthews Anglican church now stands."},{"label":"Contributor","value":"Helen (nee Lindley) Langford"},{"label":"Creator","value":"unknown"},{"label":"Date","value":"ca 1940"},{"label":"Date (EDTF)","value":"D:00 M:00 Y:1940"},{"label":"Title","value":"Thorpe family party on Birch Avenue, ca 1940"},{"label":"Repository","value":["Burlington Historical Society"]}],"description":"Thorpe family party on Birch Avenue, ca 1940","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/270a9444-38fb-4702-9f63-d672d1f15e3f/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"Thorpe family party on Birch Avenue, ca 1940","height":1082,"width":1600,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/270a9444-38fb-4702-9f63-d672d1f15e3f/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/270a9444-38fb-4702-9f63-d672d1f15e3f","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":512,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4]}]},"height":1082,"width":1600},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/270a9444-38fb-4702-9f63-d672d1f15e3f/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/270a9444-38fb-4702-9f63-d672d1f15e3f/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/270a9444-38fb-4702-9f63-d672d1f15e3f/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/logo"}
