Smith had worked in a munitions factory in Hamilton during the First World War, before joining the Burlington police force in 1918 as a motorcycle officer patrolling Highway 2 between Hamilton and Toronto. In 1930, he joined the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) motorcycle patrol, formed to police Ontario's increasingly busy highways. This 1923 mishap occurred on a quiet stretch of Highway 2 and appears to have caused minimal traffic tie-up.
