In the 1880s there were 180 students. Winnifred Harbottle, Kilbride's Heritage (1985): The massive 1876 two-storey stone Kilbride schoolhouse, with its 24-inch thick wall, its 3 x 14-inch pine joists and its unique second-floor gabled windows, was competely renovated by George and Helen Whyte in 1977. ... Mr Whyte, who runs a construction and renovation company, maintained the original floors, complete with the burn marks from the original woodstove, and the nail holes from the students' desks. The outside was restored to its original appearance, while the interior was renovated with a 26-foot ceiling at the entranceway. The windows, window casing, and the trim were all restored to natural pine, with 12-foot ceilings accentuating the school's massive size. Prior to moving into the school in 1977, the Whytes hosted an open house for \"former students, residents of Kilbride, and other interested parties.\" Betweeen 500 and 700 people attended.
