Charles Mills had trained in Chicago as an architect and in 1888 returned to Hamilton to operate his own architectural firm, working with Gordon Hutton and William Souter, who became partners in1920, after Mills's retirement. A Ceramic Engineer by profession, Harold Dingledine came to work at the National Fireproofing Company of Canada in Aldershot during the First World War, when increased production of fireproof clay products was needed.
