The 1806 map of Nelson Township shows a Nancy McKerlie owning Lot 8 Con 1 SDS (the middle lot between Appleby Line and Walker's Line, from Dundas Street south to the Upper Middle Road; 2014). William was her husband. He was commissioned on May 13, 1811. During the War of 1812 he served a total of 143 days. He served from Oct. 17 to Dec. 19, 1812. He served Aug. 27 to Sept. 1 and Sept. 21 to Oct. 8, 1813. He worked on Dundas Street Oct. 24 to Nov. 10 1813. William fought at Hutes Huas near St. David's and was taken Prisoner of War, July 4 to 24, 1814. Capt. Wm H. Merritt had him captured as Lieut. McCasley by Colonel Wilcox while at dinner. He served again Oct. 24 to Nov. 10, 1814. After the war, on May 5, 1816, he was recommended for promotion to Lieutenant. In 1822, William McKerlie along with Gilbert Bastedo and Hugh Creen were the first trustees for St. Paul's Presbyterian Church on Dundas Street.
