Plains Road was at one time the Hamilton-to-Nelson Toll Road. Tollgates were set up at Fenton's Valley Inn, the Bayview, Blain's Inn, James Kenney's (Aldershot Hotel near the former rectory of East Plains Church; a later proprietor was Mrs Charles Forsyth, who drowned in the bay in 1898), Unsworth's, Easterbrook's, Shorty Briggs' at the bay at Brown's wharf, the Red Light Hotel at Hall's Corners, and the Roderick Hotel on Waterdown Road near the Aldershot train station. One copy of this clipping has an inscription identifiying the man as \"Earl Dorlan's grandfather\". According to a note in 1998 from Mrs Art Lancaster, the statement that the man is Mr Gray (Earl Dorland's grandfather) is incorrect. First comment: The Tollkeeper family is that of William Easterbrook (1818-1903) and Mary (Mogg) Easterbrook (1821-1903) of East Flamborough. Their grandson Fred recalled that William and his sons, together with William Fleming and his sons, helped to build the first stone highway in Ontario, running from Hamilton to Toronto. A toll gate on this highway was established at Easterbrook's Corner, and there, for 19 years (says his obituary) William collected tolls (of 10 cents for each loaded vehicle, according to the Spectator). An Esso service station stood on the site of the toll gate in the summer of 1968, but William's house, some 200 yards up an intersecting road, was still standing - a large two storey frame building covered with \"tar paper brick\". Second comment: Earl Dorland's grandfather Robert Gray (1861-1942) is listed in the 1901 census as a Gate Keeper in East Flamborough living at Lot 2 of the Broken Front Concession. If it was the same tollgate, it would be long after the picture of the Easterbrook family was taken. Third comment: I remember well delivering lidded 11 qt. baskets of tomatoes and lidded 20 qt. baskets of muskmelons bound for Western Canada to Shorty Briggs' place of business near the Southwest corner of Plains Road and Waterdown Road in early to mid 1950's. Aldershot's soil was well known for its sweet muskmelons, the seeds of which were brought from Germany to the Plains Road area by the Scheer family.,43.3171,-79.8387"},{"label":"Creator","value":"unknown"},{"label":"Date","value":"ca 1900"},{"label":"Date (EDTF)","value":"D:00 M:00 Y:1900"},{"label":"Title","value":"Tollkeeper's family at the tollgate near Aldershot, ca 1900"},{"label":"Repository","value":["Burlington Historical Society"]}],"description":"Tollkeeper's family at the tollgate near Aldershot, ca 1900","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/14c0b1d8-6079-438f-962b-e83355e8ca53/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"Tollkeeper's family at the tollgate near Aldershot, ca 1900","height":296,"width":442,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/14c0b1d8-6079-438f-962b-e83355e8ca53/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/14c0b1d8-6079-438f-962b-e83355e8ca53","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":512,"scaleFactors":[1]}]},"height":296,"width":442},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/14c0b1d8-6079-438f-962b-e83355e8ca53/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/14c0b1d8-6079-438f-962b-e83355e8ca53/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/14c0b1d8-6079-438f-962b-e83355e8ca53/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/logo"}
