William was a loyalist who settled at the Head-of-the-Lake in 1798. He operated the King's Head Inn, built in 1794, at the southern end of the sand strip. In Sept. 1799 he wrote to his younger brother Augustus to persuade him to move to Upper Canada. His bother did join him and operated his own inn on the lakeshore. In 1800, William was a sergeant in the Queens Rangers. By 1804 he held the rank of Lieutenant. He enlisted in the local militia on 29 May 1806. He took the oath of loyalty that officers had to take on 4 Apr. 1812. On May 10, 1813, American schooners bombarded the inn with shot in an attempt to destroy it. In the army paybook, he was marked absent from Sept. 17 to Oct. 24, 1813. On June 4, 1814 William was Documented infirm and that he had not served in the last three years. In Dec. 1817 he petitioned for war damages as he had been discharged from his house and lands without cause or remuneration, where he had lived for 12 years and had spent $900.00 improving the house and lands .
