The original crest had been revised in 1963 by Dr G. P. Gilmour of McMaster University. The crest is surmounted by the Burlington Canal lighthouse, with the motto \"Stand By\" on a banner below. The quarters of the shield represent animal husbandry; sailing ships at the early ports, Port Nelson, the Port of Wellington Square and Brown's Wharf; industry (the beehive); and fruit growing.
