C. ('Apple Jack') & M. C. Smith, who was to be Mayor of Burlington in 1915, 1916 and 1919. This lot was registered to Ida Louise Alton, married woman, with a covenant as to a building, which may have been built under the 1906 subdivision Plan 111. 1916 Sewerage Works Plan: lot 8 and part lot 7 owned by A. D. Alton. 1919 Voters List: A. Dudley Alton is included as a Farms and Farminger, owning half of Lots 7 & 8, and entitled to vote in municipal elections only (i.e. not resident at this address). A. Dudley Alton is listed in the 1918 and 1922 Telephone Directories as a fruit grower in Appleby. The property was sold to Martin Haley in 1921. He is listed in the 1919 Voters List as a foreman, resident of Lot 3 Brant Street (compare Matthew Haley on Lot 1, now 518 Brant Street.) 1922 Telephone Directory: A. Haley & Son at a Tire & Battery service station on Brant Street. 1924 GOAD Map: 111 Brant 1927 Voters List: Mrs M. Haley, Widow, Lots 6 - 7 - 8, 111 Brant. The property passed in 1936 from the Haley estate to George Douglas McLean; in 1938 to William Alex. Ferguson & his wife, Mabel Gertrude; in 1943 to ... Whitfield ... ARCHITECTURE: A two-and-a-half storey brick structure in Edwardian vernacular style. The high hipped roof has an offset pedimented gable with fish-scale shingles and a Palladian window, extending over a two-level projection, which has large shallow-arched windows at each level. A bay window over the entrance and on the south side. Compare 518 Brant Street, the Matthew Haley house, which has lost its corner verandah, and 524 Brant . ENVIRONMENT: Situated on a corner lot at Blenheim Street. Contributes to the streetscape of the west side of Brant Street, serving as a buffer for the residential neighbourhood of Locust Street. USABILITY: Adapted for double use as offices and residence. INTEGRITY: The original corner front-and-side verandah was enclosed some time ago. Attractively renovated in 1989{?} with paired windows and a double-leaf front entrance. An exterior staircase to the second-floor apartment matches the material of the verandah. The brick has been cleaned.
