The Hendrie Gates commemorate William Hendrie, who was born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1831, and who emigrated as a young man to Hamilton, Ontario, where he established a successful business hauling freight between the new railway lines and local shippers and receivers. In 1931, to celebrate the centenary of Hendrie's birth, the family gave 122 acres of his historic breeding Farms and Farming, which is now part of the Royal Botanical Gardens. At the same time, Hendrie's family commissioned Frederick James Flatman \"to design and build a magnificent set of wrought iron gates, to be used in constructing an entrance marker to Hendrie Park\". Flatman was a master craftsman ironworker who had apprenticed in England. His design was adapted from the gates to \"The Backs\" at Trinity College, Cambridge, England. Flatman embellished the Hendrie Gates design with symbols appropriate to our New World setting: a sheaf of Durham wheat, a cluster of Ontario grapes, and a horseshoe. The craftsmanship of his wrought iron work is distinguished.  When they were actually hung he supervised the proper hanging of the gates, \"so that a child may easily open and shut them with one hand\". The Gates were designated under the Ontario Heritage Act in 1991.  After Flatman finished fabricating the soft, wrought iron gates (the panels and ironwork pillars) the work was put into storage, in a barn owned by City of Hamilton and then RBG at the entrance to McMaster University (it was available space). They were laid out flat to preserve them. Plans for Hendrie Park were still evolving, but the idea was always that the gates would be set up as an architectural marker, not as functional gates, at the park’s entrance. RBG was finally incorporated in 1941 and another decade ensued before work started on the entrance to the park. What is now called the Scented Garden in Hendrie Park was to be between the “in” and “out” driveways to the park. The gates were finally brought out of storage and erected for the first time in 1953, with new masonry piers constructed to support for them. They have always hung in the same place. Another decade after this and the plans for the larger Gardens in Hendrie Park came together, designed by J. Austin Floyd. Floyd respected the original garden area and the gates, now standing to the east of the main axis of his garden.
