It wasn't an April Fools joke as many people thought when they first heard the news. I worked as ledgerkeeper at The Imperial Bank at the corner of Brant & Caroline. Two men wearing scarves over their faces, guns drawn, entered the bank with the intention to rob the bank. The accountant and the men engaged in gun fire. Twelve shots were fired in the bank. I was terrified and fell to the floor where a bullet hit inches from me. The accountant was hit in the back, but survived his wounds. We had all the alarms going off in the bank. The police arrived just as the thieves left the bank in a car. A chase pursued through Burlington to Walkers Line. The men drove into a field with the police right behind them. There was a chase through the field and the men were captured. One police officer was wounded, but survived. All together, there were 24 shots fired. It certainly was the excitement of the day for a little town like Burlington. You may find the story in the local papers on April 2, 1959. I have originals of some newspaper articles, but they are well worn. Attached are two scanned copies of me pointing to bullet holes. I am Patricia Bye in the articles. The only other people in the bank at the time were: Teller, Bernice Slack, who still resides in Burlington, Accountant, Andre Michels, who was wounded and left the bank not long after, Manager, William Pizer, now deceased.
