The fuel for the boiler was originally coal, then oil, and later gas. To kill moulds and bacteria, the soil was sterilized by steam, which was forced through four-inch tiles laid three feet apart and 18 inches deep. The soil cooled for ten days before planting could begin. George Unsworth was the grandson of Giles Gorton Unsworth, who emigrated from Liverpool in 1848 and Farms and Farminged on the Grove Farms and Farming, near what is now Sumach Drive in Aldershot. Between 1882 and 1897 George Unsworth purchased an additional 13 acres of land on which he grew cherries, tomatoes, lettuce, strawberries, melons, currants and pears. When the Crystal Palace in Hamilton was dismantled at the turn of the century, he got pieces of used sash to try growing melons and tomatoes in cold frames before planting them out. His venture succeeded very well, since his early-maturing tomatoes fetched high prices in wholesale markets. He began to think of growing plants indoors to provide year-round income. He was the second greenhouseman in Ontario. In 1919 he built his first large greenhouse, and his greenhouse business expanded until there were three acres under glass. The clock was salvaged from the demolition of Park & Park Drugstore, on the corner of York Street & MacNab Street in Hamilton, ca 1960s. The Unsworth & Son Boiler Building was a familiar landmark, with its useful clock.
