Derived from a piece of armour once worn to protect the throat (in French, la gorge), it became both an ornament as well as an insignia of the wearer's rank. Joseph Brant's silver-gilt gorget was given to him during his visit to England in 1776, when he met King George III. It is inscribed \"The Gift of a Friend to Capt. Brant.\" Now declared a national treasure, the gorget was kept in Canada in 1968, when the Joseph Brant Museum participated successfully at a Sotheby's of Canada auction, triumphing over bidders from a Florida museum and the Smithsonian Institute in Washington. A number of Burlington citizens made donations ranging from $1 to $1,000 to purchase the gorget for $13,000. The portrait of Joseph Brant painted in London by George Romney in 1776, now in the collection of the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa, shows Brant carrying a tomahawk and wearing a fine linen shirt, an Indian blanket, plume head-dress and the silver gorget. In 2007 the Royal Canadian Mint issued a commemorative limited-edition silver dollar coin, honouring Canadian hero Thayendanegea (Joseph Brant), who is shown wearing the gorget.,The gorget is part of the Joseph Brant House Museum collection.
