Nathaniel Bell (1790 - 1852) is believed to have been the first licensed medical doctor in Halton County. He was a son of Benjamin Bell and Elizabeth Pettit, who left Roxbury, New Jersey, with their family, to come to Grimsby in 1791. His sister Mary (b. 1784) married Dr Cyrus Sumner in 1803. Nathaniel studied under Dr Summer at Beamsville. In 1812 he was assistant surgeon with Dr Kerr; was captured by the US forces, escaped, was recaptured and shot in the leg. Nathaniel received his 2nd licence from the Upper Canada medical board after April 1819. Practised from Hamilton to Guelph: bold, determined and careful operating surgeon, good at amputations. This portrait was made after his second marriage, to Mary Ann (nee Nelles, the widow of William B. O'Reilly."},{"label":"Contributor","value":"Dr Patrick Sweeny"},{"label":"Creator","value":"unknown"},{"label":"Title","value":"Dr Nathaniel Bell, ca 1843"},{"label":"Repository","value":["Burlington Historical Society"]}],"description":"Dr Nathaniel Bell, ca 1843","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/02625742-7090-4472-b8cb-c50a61892428/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"Dr Nathaniel Bell, ca 1843","height":1600,"width":1173,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/02625742-7090-4472-b8cb-c50a61892428/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/02625742-7090-4472-b8cb-c50a61892428","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":512,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4]}]},"height":1600,"width":1173},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/02625742-7090-4472-b8cb-c50a61892428/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/02625742-7090-4472-b8cb-c50a61892428/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/02625742-7090-4472-b8cb-c50a61892428/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/qstarter29/iiif/logo"}
