This collection contains prints and artwork dating between the early 16th century-1968, collected by Westfield College. Westfield College was founded in 1882 and merged with Queen Mary University of London in 1989. The collection was acquired by Westfield College Library during the early 1970s, as teaching resources primarily for the History of Art Department.

The collection comprises artwork and prints including etchings, mezzotints, engravings, dry point, lithograph, aquatint, sketches, and paintings. It also includes several anonymous colour prints created by art students in Atelier Popularie [popular studio] in response to the May 1968 student revolution which began in Paris.


Labels on the items are a result of part of the collection being catalogued by a group of postgraduates under the supervision of the Deputy Keeper of Prints and Drawings at the British Museum. A number of the Westfield Prints were compared with the same print in the British Museum to verify its authenticity and state or edition.

Image: May be a representation of an episode from Book 14 of Homer's Iliad due to the presence of the chariot of Poseidon in the waves at the left. The nude male figure in the foreground may be the lord of the sea, described as leading the Greeks with a long sword in hand. The warrior lying on the ground beneath him may be the Trojan prince Hector. Includes inscription 'I B MANTUANUS / Sculptor 1538'.


There are six states of the engraving. This print is from the second state.
