Classrooms were replaced by small offices with desks, telephones, filing cabinets and various business machines of all shapes and sounds.\" (James T. Covert, Point of Pride, p. 175) It was on November 18, 1968 that the University's new Centrex telephone system was placed in operation. It allowed anyone calling in to the University to dial directly to extensions without going through the switchboard operator and for anyone on campus to dial outgoing calls the same way. All University telephone numbers received the new prefix \"286,\" replacing the familiar \"289.\" The Centrex system was the first of its kind installed for a private university in Oregon. Besides the many bays and racks of electronic equipment, some 17,000 feet of cable and over 55,000 wire connections were required to service the 800+ telephones on campus. The Centrex system continued until 1986 when the NEC2400 system was installed for all business telephones and until 1988 when the NEAC2400 system extended direct long distance service to the residence hall telephones.
